For the second project of my Graphic Design II class, I was tasked with designing a new cover for a novel of my choice. I decided to go with my favorite book that I read in high school, Looking for Alaska. Most of the covers for the book utilize the element of cigarette smoke, but I never believed the smoking element of the story to be the most important.
Instead, I focused on the symbols of the white daisy and the labyrinth. In the novel, the white daisy symbolizes Alaska, one of the main characters. The labyrinth is mentioned multiple times throughout the novel as she and the other main character, Pudge, want to discover how to get out of the "labyrinth of suffering". For my cover, I decided to combine both symbols and created a labyrinth which takes the shape of a daisy.
Because my class did not actually print these covers, we had to imply the texture in another way. For my cover, I wanted the labyrinth to be raised off of the cover, so I applied an bevel and emboss on the lines to imply that it was supposed to be raised.
