My internship at The REACH Project all started with these posters and its accompanying social media campaign. I attended Texas A&M University, a school which places a huge emphasis on caring about your fellow Aggies and looking out for one another, especially in times of adversity like the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we tend to forget that our Aggie network does not stop at students, professors, and alumni. Our on-campus essential workers are equally as important members of the Aggie family.
During the pandemic, students and staff had the option of being remote, and therefore staying safe from the virus. However, the essential workers did not have that luxury. Despite there being a virus running rampant and no vaccine readily available, these employees still had to come to campus every day and work at the dining halls, clean the classrooms, and maintain the campus. This made them much more vulnerable to contracting COVID-19 than anyone else at Texas A&M.
My posters and social media campaign are focused around what it means to be a true Aggie in troubling times. That is, looking out for everyone and making sure we are all doing our part to stick together as one. I utilized the six Aggie core values and tied them to COVID-19 protocol to remind our students to be good Aggies and keep each other safe from the virus.
The campaign was posted weekly over the course of the Fall 2020 semester. When it ended, with 400 Instagram followers and 2,000 page likes on Facebook at the time, the entire campaign received a total of 4,000+ views, 450+ likes, and 45+ shares across both platforms. This means that over 4,000 people were reminded about the importance of our essential workers, how much more vulnerable they were to the virus than the student body, and that they should keep them as safe as possible from getting sick.
